Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: about keyboards and such.

I have always preferred Keith's sound. Despite the fact that Brent obviously was loaded with talent I just can't figure out any reason for the twinkly sound of his keyboards.

I totally understand the change to electric simply for the versatility. I don't know what it was like then (being that I'm a youngin at 29) but I know now you can get excellent electric pianos that sound just like a real piano...or anything you want them to sound like really. I'm pretty sure you could then as well. My girlfriend plays piano and we have one in our living room. She's really into classical music so it has to sound like a grand and it definitely does.

It seems to me the whole reason for the change to electic was the versatility it offered. Also, I recall hearing an interview with Bobby where he said they were desperate for a sustain instrument in the late 70s and early 80s...hence the eletric piano w/ wah & sustain pedals, organ and slide guitar entering the mix...well slide as non-lead played by Bobby.

I'm not sure where Brent's twinkle twinkle little star sound fits in there but they must have liked it. He was such a good player but that sound kills me sometimes. It sound like a toy. A previous poster is probably right..Brent probably wanted to play that way and the rest of the band just went with it.
